Keeping Your ATM Secure: What You Need to Know About New Security Rules and the Upcoming PCI Compliance Deadline

ATMs make it super easy for your customers to access cash, but as bad guys continue to get smarter and technologically advanced, keeping your ATM transactions secure is a big deal. There’s a new PCI rule coming on January 1, 2025, that all ATM owners need to know about.

What’s the Big Deal with PCI Compliance?

Think of the PCI Security Standards Council as the ATM world’s watchful guardian. They make sure ATMs, credit card machines, and payment systems stay safe and secure. They’re all about keeping your cash and card info out of the wrong hands in the U.S.

ATM Keypad Security:

To keep things secure, there’s a new rule for ATM PIN pads, also called EPPs or Keypads (where you enter your PIN), and keeping data safe. By the end of 2024, all ATMs need to have the latest security upgrades. If an ATM can’t be updated, it will need to be replaced altogether.

Starting January 1, 2025, ATMs have to use the newest security software to protect your PIN and data. If they don’t, they won’t work anymore because the processing networks will be forced to shut them down. This basically means that it’s either upgrade the ATM, or understand that your ATM will be rendered useless and cease to process any transactions.

Advice for ATM Owners:

We highly recommend you don’t drag your feet…  Upgrade soon to avoid a last-minute rush and higher costs. If you’re thinking of buying a used ATM, make sure it can be updated to meet these new rules and standards. If you wait too long, you will undoubtedly find keypad upgrade kits and ATM prices going up with inventory being hard to find.

Why Act Early:

We’ve been in the ATM industry for nearly 30 years, and trust us, updating early is the way to go. Waiting until the last minute can mean paying more and having a harder time getting what you need. If you have multiple ATMs or are a sub-ISO with a fleet of ATMs, it is imperative to start your upgrade process as soon as possible.

Check if your ATM needs an update, or if you’re unsure, give us a call sooner rather than later.

From the front of the ATM, if the keypad has ‘Enter‘ in the upper right corner, it is Non-Compliant. If it has ‘Cancel‘ in the upper right corner, then check to see if it says ‘EPP-B1‘ or ‘EPP-B2‘. If it does, then it is ‘Non-Complaint‘.

If your keypad looks like the below keypad with ‘Cancel‘ in the upper right, please ensure it says ‘EPP-B3‘ or ‘EPP-B5‘ to confirm Compliance.
